Sad news came out of the World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE) on Nov. 5 that English pro Emma Fryer was killed in a car accident.

First picked up by Matthew Pitt at Pokernews, the story has since filtered through various social media networks and, understandably, messages of sympathy have followed. According to a Facebook post from English pro Matt Davenport, Fryer was involved in a car accident on her way to a hotel in the Czech Republic.

“RIP Emma Fryer. Can’t believe I’m writing that after chatting to her last night. She was so looking forward to playing in the biggest tourney of her life today. The rest of this trip is going to be a very somber one indeed,” Davenport wrote.

Rising Star

Although details are scant, it was later confirmed that foggy conditions contributed to a crash that resulted in Fryer losing her life. Fryer had only listed her profession as “poker player” on Oct. 6, 2017.

Prior to that, she had been a poker and casino VIP account manager for Bet365 since 2004, according to her LinkedIn page.

With cashes across small and mid-level tournaments across the UK, Fryer was in the Czech Republic to take part in her first WSOPE. Having banked almost £45,000 ($59,000) in the Dusk til Dawn 1000 last month, Fryer was riding a rich vein of form that could have potentially catapulted her into the limelight at the European festival.

Community Condolences

Joining the wave of condolences online was Unibet ambassador Daiva Byrne, who not only paid tribute to Fryer’s poker skills, but her personality.

“My heart breaks to hear the tragic news regarding Emma Fryer. She was such a wonderful person and an amazing player,” Byrne wrote online.

As the community in the UK and beyond mourns the death of someone described as a positive role model in the game, a Just Giving page has been created to help.

Listed by Karen Lawrence, the appeal is aiming to raise £1,000 ($1,300) for Fryer’s family to help them get through this difficult time. At the last count, 31 people had already donated almost $1,000.

Fryer is survived by her longtime partner, Gary Morris, and two daughters, Gemma and Jess.
